Palatalization (구개음화), according to Wikipedia is “As a phonetic description, the secondary articulation of consonants by which the body of the tongue is raised toward the hard palate during the articulation of the consonant. Such consonants are phonetically palatalized, and in the International Phonetic Alphabet they are indicated by a superscript ‘j’, as [t^j] for a palatalized [t].“. Maybe or maybe not, I could not understand fully, sorry. Anyway, mainly and practically in Korean pronunciation as a result of palatalization (구개음화) ㄷ (or ㅌ) changes its sound value to ㅈ (or ㅊ). In this episode we are going to introduce you under what conditions some of the Palatalization happen and how they happen. Video is here as an supporting purpose.

-Type 1 구개음화(”gukhae eumhwa”)

This happens when the ending consonant “ㄷ”(”d”) meets a initial vowel “이”(”i” or “yi”) (or 여["yeo], 히["hi"], 혀["hyeo"]) in the next syllable. When they meet, “ㄷ” get out of the ending consonant place and become “ㅈ”(”j”) in the place of “ㅇ”(or “ㅊ” ["ch.."]]in the place of “ㅎ”["h"]).

• ㄷ + 이 (written) –> nothing + 지 (read):

  굳이[구지], 해돋이[해도지], 맏이[마지].–>(pronounced:”gudi[guji]“,”haedodi[haedoji]“,”madi[maji]“)

• ㄷ + 여 (written) –> nothing + 져 (read):

• ㄷ + 히 (written) –> nothing + 치 (read):

  묻히다[무치다], 닫히다[다치다](pronounced:”mudhida[muchida]“,”dadhida[dachida]“)

Analogy of 연음화(”yeoneumhwa”) can be found in English too. For example, let’s consider a phrase “made in England” when “made in” part is pronounce word by word phonetically it will sound like [may-d in]. However all together it will sound like [may d-in]. In other words, the consonant “d” in “made” links to “in” and detach itself from “made” phonetically. Similar things happen in Korean. When the ending consonant meets the next syllable which starts with a vowel, the ending consonant depart from the its own syllable and becomes a initial consonant for the next vowel phonetically.

연음화 examples (* All changes occur phonetically)

Basic consonants: simply the ending consonants replaces the silent consonant “ㅇ” of the next syllable.

+월요일 –> [워료일], 월요일: Monday(pronouced:”weolyeo il”)

+목요일 –> [모교일], 목요일: Thursday(pronounced:”mokyeo il”)

+책을 –> [채글], 책: book(pronounced:”chaekeul” or “chaek”)

+책이 –>[채기], 책:book(the mean still same but different pronounced:from “chaekeul” to “chaeki”.the word of “chaek” still same)

+안아 주세요 –>[아나 주세요], 안다: hug, 안아주세요: give me a hug please or almost literally, do me a favor by hugging me.(pronouced:”anajusseyo”)

Double consonants: same as the case of simple consonants

+였어요 –>여써요(pronounced:”yeoseyo”)

+볶아 주세요–>[보까 주세요], 볶다: roast, sizzle, boil down in oil(pronounced:”bokkajuseyo”)

Compound consonants other than double consonants (a combination of two different basic consonants): in this case ONLY the second basic consonant within compound consonant will link to the next vowel and the first consonant within the compound consonant will stay the same.

+앉아 주세요 –>[안자 주세요], 앉다: sit, 앉아주세요: please sit down or almost literally, do me a favor by sitting down.(pronounced:”anjajuseyo” it’s mean please sit down and “anja” it’s mean sit)

+흙을 –> [흘글]: syllable by syllable it will be 흙[흑]을[을], 흙: soil, dirt, earth.(pronounced:”heulgeul”)

all Form 3 student had a “war” for the first time in their life(including me)….We had an exam which all Form 3 student who age 15 years old for this year.This exam we call it PMR or it’s fullname in Malay is Penilaian Menengah Rendah(Lower Secondary Assessment).I SAID 15 YEARS OLD FOR THIS YEAR(becoz’ i’m borned on 2nd November 1994,so..i’m still 14..-_-).But i must had this exam too…
